SHAKESPEARE’S VENUS AND ADONIS

Shakespeare wrote Venus and Adonis after his main source of revenue as a playwright had been cut off  - Health and Safety having closed London's theatres due to the severe plague epidemic in 1592/3. It was his first work to be published, immediately flying off the shelves and going on to become the bestseller of its day. The poem’s commercial success was due in no small part to its wildly erotic passages which describe how – over a period of twenty four hours in a secluded wood – Venus, a woman of vast sexual experience, attempts to seduce Adonis, a young and beautiful virgin boy.
